2026 Declared the Year of the Amphibian Adventure.
My key observation from the recent Day of the Devs showcase was undoubtedly entertaining, my biggest takeaway was a personal epiphany: I am convinced that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.
Exactly five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these leaping protagonists. Given that a gathering of frogs is termed an army, it appears they are launching an invasion.
The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians
Amphibians have been not at all new to the world of games. Ever since the era of Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a niche presence. But, their prevalence has noticeably increased in recent times.
A simple search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an absolute deluge of results. Although, some of these are low-budget titles, a great many are bona fide titles centered on frogs.
Charting the Croak Comeback
To understand this trend, I undertook a deep dive into the recent history of frog-related gaming on Steam. My approach was based on clear indicators, counting games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.
The data reveal an unmistakable trend: a marked increase from less than 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.
This dramatic growth prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The amphibian's growing prominence in the public consciousness is also visible elsewhere, like the revival of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. However, the wave in gaming seems particularly powerful.
Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage
Frankly, this is a shift I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs have built-in design advantages for game developers.
- Weird Little Guys: They are incredibly easy to be designed as memorable characters that frequently end up as a highlight in any game.
- Unique Gameplay: Their stretchy limbs and grappling abilities facilitate a host of creative gameplay ideas.
A number of the announced projects directly leverage these traits. Examples include the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.
What the Future Holds
So, what does this mean for 2026? With five frog games publicly revealed before the year has even started—and the potential for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the most significant year yet.
Should these games are received positively—and historically, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we could very well be on the verge of a genuine frog gaming renaissance.
