Arne Slot concedes it promises to be a tough job to revive struggling Liverpool
The Dutch manager stated that he faces a substantial challenge to uplift Liverpool after Manchester United prevailed at Anfield for the first time in over nine years, delivering a fourth successive defeat on the faltering Premier League champions.
Wastefulness and Set-Piece Issues
The team's manager pointed to wastefulness in front of goal and additional defensive errors on dead balls from his team for their latest defeat, as the opposing coach enjoyed the initial consecutive league victories of his tenure at United.
The United defender, whose 84th-minute header secured victory, stated it was "embarrassing" that United had required 51 matches to accomplish that feat under the Portuguese coach.
Squandered Chances
The Liverpool coach asserted it should not have been possible for Liverpool to be defeated in a game in which they created so many clear chances. Gakpo rattled the goal frame on three occasions and failed to convert a clear-cut chance to net a tying strike in the late stages. But having fallen to one opponent, another team, Chelsea, and now United, the head coach conceded he has a task on his hands to end Liverpool's negative run.
Persistent Tests
"In my role, you always encounter difficulties," remarked Slot. "At the beginning and you must secure victories, when joining a larger team, as the heir of the previous coach and people are claiming: 'It represents the greatest test you have ever faced.' Now we have suffered four consecutive defeats and that is also a challenge. The existence of a team boss is truly an ongoing challenge."
Morale and Play
"However, is our belief shaken? I can not see that yet because every game we've lost we were able to create in the final 45 minutes an unbelievable amount of openings. If we can continue generating what we are accomplishing and perhaps do a few things a little bit better, then there is strong cause to foresee that we will secure matches again. Of course there is the additional factor that, apart from the two goals we let in, we yielded perhaps a couple more openings. This is continually the battle we have when we are 1-0 down, then you have to embrace a little more of a chance."
Officiating Debate
The manager believed the umpire, the ref, should have paused play before Bryan Mbeumo's early goal because of a blow to the head sustained by Mac Allister. The team member had to have medical stitching in a gash. But the manager stated: "The primary focus I must do now is not complain at such incidents. We ought to have performed significantly improved after the player was on the floor but the well-being of the team members is vital and if a player must have four stitches, you would hope everybody understands he needed care. But we should have executed more effectively and that is not the factor we fell short. The cause is we squandered way too many opportunities to secure victory in a contest."
Opposing Views
The United manager said United's spirit and composure was essential to triumph at Anfield, particularly after Gakpo levelled for Liverpool towards the end, but insisted the greatest achievement of his turbulent reign would not alter any targets for the season.
The United head coach remarked: "I want you guys [the media] to continue with the storyline that you have so I do not intend to increase the goal. What we need to do is aim to secure victory in a trio of successive fixtures now and forget about European qualification or top six. We previously stated we aim to go to European competition. This doesn't change nothing. We are the same team we were at kick-off."
Squad Responses
The defender, though, labeled the triumph as "massive" for United as they at last obtained back-to-back Premier League wins under the manager. United's decisive player stated: "It's humiliating really. It's not a statistic that we should even be speaking about because it is an shameful record to have."
"With that behind us, we aim and make it three [wins] on Saturday against the opposition, because we need to start displaying a bit more consistency together. The past few campaigns we'd put in a performance like this and the next fixture we decline again. We have established a standard, there are many elements we can enhance."
"The manager aims for perfection so I'm confident he will expect us to perform more effectively than we performed in the final 45 minutes. Great fight, strong spirit, big triumph, but again we must proceed again."
