Thunder Begin Title Defense with Dramatic Double Overtime Victory
The Thunder star came to Oklahoma City back in 2019.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored the game-winning baskets late in double overtime as the Oklahoma City Thunder opened their NBA title defense with a 125-124 victory over the visiting Rockets.
Last season's MVP poured in a team-high 35 points, including two clutch free throws with just 2.3 seconds left in double OT, securing the titleholders a winning beginning.
The Rockets' big man top-scored with a game-high 39 and also hit a personal-best five three-pointers.
But Chet Holmgren, who contributed 28 points, played a major role together with the game's hero.
"Grit and defense," SGA said of their showing. "We know that when we do it on defence we give ourselves a chance no matter what's going on—makes, missed attempts, fortune or misfortune. We did enough defensive work to get the win. We're pretty rusty, but it's a good start."
Prior to the tip-off, Oklahoma's title banner was raised at their home court, while the players were awarded their championship rings.
The Thunder defeated the Indiana Pacers in the previous season's championship series. It was their maiden championship since the team moved in 2008 to OKC from Seattle, who had won the 1979 crown.
Indiana will have the opportunity to secure some payback on this Friday when they host Oklahoma, while the Houston return to action on the identical day at the Pistons.
In other action, a massive effort of 43 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists from Luka Doncic was insufficient to stop his new team the Lakers from suffering a 119-109 defeat against the Warriors.
Jimmy Butler picked up 31 points and Golden State's sharpshooter added 23 for the visiting Warriors.
The Lakers were missing the league's top scorer James as he recovers from a back issue.
